Lanai is a very small and quaint island right next to Maui and Molokai. Lanai was formerly known as the Pineapple Island - once the home of a thriving pineapple plantation. Lanai has reinvented itself as an alluring resort destination offering world-class golf courses and award-winning accommodations. There are also some vacation rentals on Lanai which can make it a budget friendly place to stay.
A place of deep cultural significance, this island boasts many historical sites, old fishing villages, and unique topographical features like the boulder-strewn Keahikawelo. In the center of the island, Lanai City features thoroughly and lovingly restored landmarks, including the lovely Lanai Playhouse and Theater and the charming Hotel Lanai, both dating from the 1920’s. It is here in Lanai City that you can find some alternative lodging and accommodations such as small Lanai hotels, Lanai inns, Lanai bed and breadkfasts and Lanai vacation rentals.
In the late 1980s, as the pineapple industry began to wane, Lanai turned to tourism. Two luxury resorts were built - the Lodge at Koele and the Manele Bay Hotel.
